BIOS Website Redesign and CiviCRM Migration
The British and Irish Orthoptic Society (BIOS) represents orthoptists across the UK and Ireland, providing resources, professional development opportunities, and support to its members.
BIOS needed a more modern website with improved navigation and easier member management.
The Challenge
The previous website was built on WordPress and relied on MemberPress for membership management. It worked, but it had its limitations. The design and structure had become dated and difficult for people to navigate.
Overall, it no longer reflects BIOS today. The new website is cleaner, more intuitive, and easier for both members and the internal team to manage.
The Solution
We focused the project on two main areas:
- Moving from MemberPress to CiviCRM.
- Redesigning the website from the ground up.
Migration to CiviCRM
BIOS moved over to CiviCRM, an open-source CRM designed for membership-based organisations. This opened up a lot of improvements, including:
- A more detailed, personalised member dashboard that lets people easily check memberships, payments, and event bookings.
- Better data management and reporting for the BIOS team.
- Smoother integration with communication and event tools.
- Automated renewals and reminders reduced manual admin work.
- CiviCRM also gives BIOS something they never had with MemberPress: proper visibility over the full member journey.
Instead of only managing payments and user access, the team can now follow the entire lifecycle, from first contact to long-term, repeat membership.
All touchpoints sit in one place: emails, notes, payments, event activity, and engagement levels. This makes it easy to monitor member activity and manage present and future actions.
MemberPress couldn’t offer that depth. It showed the basics, but not the behaviour or patterns that actually help an organisation build stronger relationships.
Full Website Redesign
With the CRM upgrade, the website received a complete redesign to make it feel modern and user-friendly.
A few of the key improvements:
- Brighter colours that fit BIOS’s identity.
- A simplified structure that makes it much easier to find the right information.
- Modern and clean design with a responsive layout so everything works nicely on mobile, tablet, and desktop.
- A clearer content layout to help both members and visitors get where they need to go quickly.
- The focus was on usability, navigation, and ensuring the website works well for members and admins.
The Results
The new BIOS website, paired with CiviCRM, delivers key improvements such as:
- Advanced membership management thanks to CiviCRM migration.
- Members now have a cleaner, more intuitive experience, with custom, interactive member dashboard
- Less admin for the team, thanks to automated processes.
- A more modern interface that reflects the organisation.
- Better engagement through improved communication and event management.
Conclusion
The BIOS website redesign and CRM migration brought together modern design and better member and event management. The result is an interface that feels more professional, useful, and aligned with the orthoptic community it represents.
This builds on our previous collaboration with BIOS, where we supported their earlier website setup.
